Water retention — swelling in feet, ankles, hands, or face — is uncomfortable and often signals an underlying issue. Dietary management addresses the most common causes: excess sodium, low protein, hormonal patterns, and venous/lymphatic issues.
Edema (water retention) has many causes — high sodium intake, premenstrual hormonal patterns, pregnancy, prolonged sitting/standing, certain medications, kidney issues, heart conditions, low protein intake.
Reducing sodium intake substantially decreases retention. Increasing potassium counterbalances sodium. Adequate protein prevents the low-albumin edema pattern. Hydration paradoxically helps (dehydration can worsen retention).
Hidden sodium sources eliminated. Visible swelling reduces.
Potassium balance restored. Protein adequate.
