Context

About water retention.

Edema (water retention) has many causes — high sodium intake, premenstrual hormonal patterns, pregnancy, prolonged sitting/standing, certain medications, kidney issues, heart conditions, low protein intake.

Mechanism

How diet helps.

Reducing sodium intake substantially decreases retention. Increasing potassium counterbalances sodium. Adequate protein prevents the low-albumin edema pattern. Hydration paradoxically helps (dehydration can worsen retention).

Include

Foods we build on.

  • 01Potassium-rich: banana, coconut water, leafy greens
  • 02Adequate hydration
  • 03Adequate protein
  • 04Asparagus, celery (natural diuretics)
  • 05Cucumber, watermelon (water content)
Limit

Foods we step away from.

  • ×01Excess salt and salty Indian condiments (papad, achaar, namkeen)
  • ×02Packaged foods (hidden sodium)
  • ×03Excess alcohol
  • ×04Sweetened beverages
