Why this works for you

What this recipe does.

Recommended for

  • ·Anyone craving Indian sweets without the heavy guilt
  • ·Festival or special occasion sweets
  • ·Iron-deficient clients (jaggery + tradition)
  • ·Children's healthier dessert option
Ingredients · for 4

The mise en place.

  • 6 slices whole-wheat bread, edges trimmed, cubed
  • 1.5 cups milk (low-fat)
  • 1/2 cup jaggery (powdered) — adjust to taste
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 8-10 cashews, chopped
  • 8-10 almonds, slivered
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • A few saffron strands (optional)
Method

Step, by step.

  1. 1

Cut bread into small cubes after trimming the edges.

  2. 2

Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan. Roast cashews, almonds, and raisins until golden. Remove and set aside.

  3. 3

In the same pan, add remaining ghee. Add bread cubes. Roast on low-medium heat for 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 4

Add milk and stir continuously. The bread will absorb the milk and start breaking down.

  5. 5

Add jaggery powder. Stir until completely dissolved and the mixture thickens (about 5-7 minutes).

  6. 6

Add cardamom powder and saffron. Mix well.

  7. 7

Garnish with roasted nuts and raisins. Serve warm.
