Chronic constipation is one of the most common complaints we see, and one of the easiest to fix through diet. Most clients see daily, comfortable bowel movements within 2-3 weeks of adjusted eating — without dependence on laxatives.
Chronic constipation — fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, hard stools, straining, incomplete evacuation — affects a significant portion of urban Indian adults. Causes include inadequate fibre, inadequate water, sedentary lifestyle, irregular meal timing, certain medications, hypothyroidism, and gut microbiome disruption.
Dietary fix involves: (1) gradually increasing fibre to 25-35g daily, (2) ensuring adequate hydration (fibre without water makes constipation worse), (3) supporting gut microbiome through fermented foods and prebiotic foods, (4) regular meal timing (the gut has a circadian rhythm), and (5) identifying and managing constipating triggers (excess dairy in some, low-FODMAP issues in others).
Increased fibre + water restores baseline regularity.
Daily comfortable bowel movements establish.
Fermented foods + prebiotics build long-term gut health.
